Ganesha is elephant-headed god of Hindu tradition, widely venerated as “Remover of Obstacles”, appropriate perhaps for this namesake restaurant in gradually regenerating Bedminster. When Ganesha opened on Bedminster Parade in February 2008, there were probably a few raised eyebrows.
Ganesha not only survived recession but has become very popular. It’s doubled in size and relocated to where short-lived Kolkatta’s Kitchen was. Brown leather banquettes in the centre now act as a natural divider, making for a more impressively cosy and intimate dining experience while feeling spacious and airy at the same time. Indian paintings on walls and instruments on shelves along with some lower lighting makes for a striking transformation.
Ganesha, remaining true to its Southern Indian roots, avoids traditional Anglo-Indian classics and only offers the sort of food you find in India. There is an abundance of fish, seafood, chicken, lamb and various Indian spices used in the food, which tends to be more aromatic than usual balti house fare.
The menu consists of most popular starters and curries from different parts of India. Try Masala Dosa, a South-Indian tea time snack very much liked all over India, for starters.
