A complimentary main course
when a second main course of equal or greater value is purchased
Spawned in Oxford in 1995, Fishers swam downriver to open its Bristol doors in January 2001. The premises may be land-locked but the décor, furnishings, logo, in fact just about everything, carry heavy hints of the sea, including lanterns, seaside benches, portholes, a ship’s ventilator at the bottom of the stairs, and an illustrated chart showing what the fish looked like before Fishers got hold of them.
Very little that has not lived in the ocean makes it onto the menu and the fish and shellfish on offer only come from sustainable stocks. Catches come in daily and so the menu reflects the season and the fishermen’s fortune in both British and International waters.
The menu caters for all fishy tastes, from the traditional haddock in batter with chips and mushy peas to a delicate, unfussy whole lemon sole, with plenty of swordfish, yellow fin tuna and Canadian lobster. There are rock pools of shellfish to choose from, or the whole lot can be had on a platter and, for those with a ship to catch, there is a two-course lunch option. So far, fish have not made it on to the dessert list, but plenty of comfortable options such as sticky toffee pudding have.
There is a good wine list, mostly whites, to help the catch find its way back to the deep.
Good fish restaurants in Bristol are hard to find but the difficulty of sometimes securing a table at Fishers is testament to its growing popularity.
