“Lal” is a Hindu word for “loved” and this superior curry house, located away from the more expensive city centre, certainly has plenty of admirers since it comes recommended by the Good Curry Guide, The Evening Post Academy Awards, and the Master Chef Roll of Honour.
The décor suggests an Indian prince's boudoir with rich, heavy drapes adorning the ceiling and the booths round the edge of the dining area, ornate green marble pillars, attention to detail everywhere and gold with mother of pearl condiment sets. The low lights and the soothing twang of the sitar complete the illusion. It is not called the Lal Jomi Pavilion Restaurant for nothing and some regard the pickle tray as the best in Bristol, with particular attention reserved for the brinjal chutney.
The food is very popular and along with familiar favourites there are plenty of chef’s specials including pabna delight, a medium curry with very tender chicken cooked in a rich tomato sauce, and the sizzling Karai prawn accompanied by sag aloo.
With service and comfort second to none, all headed up by the hospitable owner Mr Miah, it's no wonder Lal Jomi is such a popular venue with M.P.s, local personalities and regulars from near and far.
Lal Jomi does a thriving takeaway business as well, but there is one final exotic touch awaiting those that have spent the evening dining in this palatial pretence; a rose for each of the ladies.
